Kykkos was built about 900 years ago for its icon, the painting of which is attributed to St Loukas the Evangelist and was given to a Cypriot monk by Emperor Comnemos for relieving his dayghter's sciatica.
The famous icon is called Eleousa. It has been encased in silver for 200 years and that stands in front of the iconostasis. Photography is not permitted. There is also a small one-room museum with items of interest from the monastery's past, mainly religious regalia and books.
