Saturday, March 18th and Sunday, March 19th, OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO will be held for the 11th time with thousands of runners from Cyprus and abroad participating. This event, which attracts more than 13,000 athletes, is the largest sporting event on the island. For the first time in its history, it will be a two-day event and once again, My Guide Cyprus is proudly the media sponsor.

The course of the OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO is described as 'fast and flat', with 'a low degree of difficulty', making it ideal for both first-time marathon runners and experienced runners looking to improve their time. The course is relatively flat and straight, following Limassol's beautiful coastal road. The Limassol Marathon is popular not only for its easy course but also for being one of the most beautiful marathons in the world, offering views of the Mediterranean for much of the course. With sunny weather and a warm welcome from Cyprus, runners can easily 'Run with a smile'!

The OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO consists of six different events. The Marathon (42.195 km), the Half Marathon (21.000 km), the 10km Petrolina Energy race, and two five-kilometer events - the 'City Race' and the 'PrimeTel Corporate Race'. There is also the one-kilometer Audrey & Julia Dashin Foundation Youth Race for 6-16 year olds. There are six different age categories, including one for those aged 70+ years.

Many runners from abroad enjoy coming to Cyprus for this event as marathon running originated in this part of the Mediterranean. Legend has it that in 490 BC, the Greek soldier, Pheidippides, ran for two days from the Battle of Marathon to Athens to deliver the important news of the Persian defeat. He arrived at the Senate and declared nenikekamen – we are victorious â€“ before collapsing and dying on the steps of the Senate.
The Marathon was one of the events in the first Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896. The marathon distance was set at 26 miles and 385 yards (42.195 km) in 1908 when the Olympics were held in London. The course was initially planned to run from Windsor to White City - a distance of exactly 26 miles, but at the last minute, an additional 385 yards was added so that the royal children could see the event start at Windsor Castle! The marathon remains a popular Olympic event, with the men's marathon traditionally being the final event of the Games. The finish line is always in the Olympic stadium, and the arrival of the first runners is part of the closing ceremony. Today, more than 500 marathons are held worldwide each year.

The event starts on Saturday, March 18th at 09:00 with the 5km PrimeTel Corporate Race, which was the most popular event last year with business teams from all industries participating. It is an excellent way to promote team building! Later in the morning, the Youth Race will take place. The Sponsors Village will be located at the Old Port at Molos and will host fun entertainment in the afternoon, including music, dance, aerobics, and Zumba. In the evening, there will be a colorful Pasta Party.

The 2017 AIMS accredited OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO, Half Marathon, 10km Petrolina Energy Race, and 5km City Race will all start at 07:00 on Sunday morning. All races will start on the seafront in the Molos area near Limassol Castle. Marathon runners will head west towards the New Port area, loop back, and head east along the coast road towards the historic site of Ancient Amathus, before looping back west to the finish line on the seafront at the Molos promenade.

For those aiming to win, there are great prizes to be won! The top three male and female Marathon runners will receive cash prizes of €2,000 for first place, €1,500 for second, and €1,000 for third (if their finish time is less than 2:17:22 for men and 2:50:00 for women). If they beat the current record time of 02:13:29 (men) or 02:38:56 (women), their prize money will be doubled! Cash prizes are also awarded to the top three male and female Half Marathon runners, with the opportunity to double the prize money by beating the current record time (01:04:19 for men and 01:12:35 for women). Trophies will be given to the fastest runners in each age category and to the first team to finish in the PrimeTel Corporate Race. At the OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO, every runner is a winner, as each runner will receive a medal and a participation certificate.

Behind the scenes, the Limassol Marathon is a well-organized event with over 500 local volunteers ensuring everything runs smoothly! There are refreshment stations with mineral water every 2.5 km, and there are plenty of marshals and First Aid personnel along the route. All runners are expected to finish within six hours, and everyone enjoys warm Cypriot hospitality at the celebration party after the race, with music and dance bands entertaining everyone.

Now is the time to take action! If you would like to participate in one of the events in the 2017 OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO, registrations for individuals and running clubs are available on the event's website. The site provides detailed information about all the races, including entry fees, with discounts available for various categories, including university students.
