The monastery is set in a beautiful surroundings to the south of Panayia, 40 kms from Paphos town. This enchanting monastery is dedicated to 'Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate' and was founded in 1152 by monk Ignatios who found a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary off the shore of Pafos. Legend has it that it was thrown into the sea in Asia Minor during the iconoclastic period and drifted by the waves to Pafos. The present building dates to 1770.
The church is of great interest as is the rich collection of Holy Books and religious o bjects and artifacts some of which can be viewed at the Icons and Treasures Museum.
An impressive religious ceremony is held here on 15 August, on the occasion of Virgin Mary Dormition Day.
The entrance to the church is free.
