Kyriazis Medical Museum
Cyprus
Museums
The museum includes plenty of medical furniture, instruments and photos of medical practice in ancient times. Visit gets much more interesting when you ask the museum's curator to show you demonstrations on how these instruments worked...especially the electroshock device!
The museum is located in the heart of Larnaka, (a town with strong medical connections throughout antiquity, middle ages and the Ottoman period) near the church of St Lazarus. There are displays of old medical instruments, pharmacy items, photographs and prints relating to the history of medicine in Cyprus.
The 'Kyriazis Medical Museum' is a new, non-profit, non-governmental organisation set up specifically in order to operate a museum of the medical, healing and health history of Cyprus. Its founding members include medical doctors, pharmacists, historians and members of the public interested in the history of Cyprus. This is the first medical museum in Cyprus and was created to preserve medical and other health-related information in Cyprus.
Visitors are able to touch and use most of the exhibits, and you can experience what was like to be ill in the times before anaesthetics or antibiotics. In addition, there are many old-fashioned recipies and poems about the practice of medicine in Cyprus. We hold regular events in the garden, where there is also a small collection of medicinal herbs used in Cyprus.
Go and spend some relaxing time in their 'health hangout' where they serve traditional Cypriot health drinks, including a secret 'elixir of youth'!
Opening hours: Wednesday and Saturday 09:00-12:30. Other times by arrangement.
