Choirokitia is a great site with significant importance on the history of ancient civilisations. Conveniently located on the Limassol-Nicosia highway it can be organised as part of your sightseeing schedule. The reconstructed houses assist in getting a clear image. Be prepared to go up some steps!
Choirokoitia is an archaeological landmark located about 30 minutes drive from Larnaka, Lefkosia and Lemesos. This fascinating ancient site dates back to 6,800BC and is thought to be one of the earliest permanent human settlements in Cyprus.
The houses were crowded together, protected by walls. A house consisted of a compound of several buildings with a circular ground plan around an unroofed space, a kind of small inner “courtyard”. These structures were built in stone, pisé and sun-dried mudbrick, or any combination of the three. The roof was flat and consisted of a wooden frame made out of branches, reeds, pisé and earth. Excavation revealed that the dead were buried in pits inside the dwelling units.
Choirokoitia Neolithic settlement is included in the UNESCO world cultural heritage list since 1998. It is one of the best preserved settlements of this period in Cyprus and in the whole of Easter Mediterranean.
