Nicosia, the capital city of the island, has a history of 1,000 years and it has today become a modern city that combines culture and modernity. Surrounded by the Venetian Walls, that were erected in the 16th century by Venetian conquerors, the heart of the city - the Old Nicosia - features museums, ancient churches and temples, neo-classic buildings, narrow streets that encompass the romantic feel of an ancient city of the past.

Its rich past has also some scars still visible by the occupation of half of the city by Turkish forces but residents remain hopeful that a resolution of that will soon be achieved.

Nicosia is the centre of Cyprus with all major Government Offices, Financial Institutions Headquarters and an abundance of large, medium and small businesses. Outside the Venetian Walls, a modern city has sprung with a cosmopolitan feel of a modern European City, while constant investment in large projects by the Nicosia Municipality make the future even brighter.

If you are interested in getting married in Nicosia you have to apply personally to the Civil Marriage Office in order to be informed about the documents you need to obtain.

Civil marriages can be occurred between Cypriot citizens, Cypriots with foreigners and between foreigners.

The Civil Marriage ceremony takes place in the old city, 11 Eptanisou street, 1016 Nicosia, in a place especially arranged for the ceremony.

Civil Marriage between Cypriots and Foreigners with Cypriots

The couple has to obtain certificates of marital status as follows:

Cypriots and/or residents of Cyprus:

1.  Affi Davit at a Registrar of the District Court of Nicosia
2. Statement from the Ministry of Interior (MIGRATION)
3. Divorce Certificate (Decree Absolute)
4. Death Certificate of Spouse
5. Copy of Birth Certificate
6. Passport
7. ID Card

Foreigners:
1. Recent Certificate of marital status from a Governmental Authority ( i.e. 
    Town Hall, Ministry of Interior, Registry Office, Embassy etc)
2. Birth Certificate
3. Divorce Certificate
4. Death Certificate of Spouse
5. Passport or European ID Card

All the above documents, to be valid and recognized, must be legalized with an APOSTILLE Stamp (if the interested party's country is a member of the Hague Convention) or legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cyprus Embassy or Consulate in the country (if the country is not part of the Hague Convention). All documents must be officially translated into English, if not issued in English. The documents of Civil Status Certificate (Unmarried Certificate), according to the provisions of the Marriage Law is valid only for three (3) months from the date of issue.

There are two procedures of Civil Marriage. The Special Procedure and the procedure by Notice of Marriage.

Special Procedure

If the couple has special reason for marrying early it will follow the Special procedure whereby they can get married the same day of their application or less than fifteen days.

Notice of Marriage

In this case the couple will sign the notice of Marriage and can get married after 15 days from the day of their application, but not later than 3 months.

For certified true copy of the Certificate of Marriage the couple must apply at the Civil Marriage Office of Nicosia Municipality.
